VERYDISTRO.COM NEWS:

We haven't had an update like this in a while.  Kind of big.  First I had Ben go through the Touch And Go distributed section and he found all kinds of stuff that's not on the site, or hasn't been in a while.  I don't know things like Elliott Smith,
THE KILLS, BLACK MOUNTAIN, DAVID BAZAN, PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS, LE TIGRE, etc.  I don't know, look around in the update, I have a hang over today and don't feel like typing. Everytime I hit a key it hurts my brain.

New stuff, most importand to me AMEBIX!  Yup, AMEBIX "No Sanctuary: The Spiderleg Recordings" on CD and LP+7"!  DRIVE LIKE JEHU, (What?  It's 2008!) S/T, and Yank Crime + 7" represses.
THE GOSSIP "Live In Liverpool" LP+DVD is up.  Sometimes bootlegs are the highest form of flattering a band, well add HOT CROSS to that list.  HOT CROSS / HOT CROSS split 7" on orange wax.
SOILENT GREEN "Inevitable Collapse In The Presence Of Conviction" CD, we're a little late on it but it's here.  JOB FOR A COWBOY "Genisis" LTD. picture disc is up.
JOAN OF ARC "Boo! Human" on CD and LP is available as well.  DOWN "Over The Under" 2XLP.  RUSSIAN CIRCLES has a new one out as well.  Lastly YMG is members of OFF MINOR and it's pretty cool if you're into the Hot Water/Against Me!/Avail type of stuff.
Lastly WHO CALLS SO LOUD "S/T" 2X10 w/CD is now out.  That's got ex-dudes from The Funeral Diner.  Finally, Neurosis main men STEVE VON TIL and SCOTT KELLY both have respectively released their new solo records.

What else...man, a bunch of stuff that I personally like that I brought in because I want people to buy it.  DEATH IN JUNE, LOREN CONNORS, bunch of MISFITS LP'S, CRASS,
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE, etc.

New Releases With Full Descriptions:

!!! - Myth Takes CD (Warp)
With a wit, swagger and well-tuned ear for the dance floor, !!! have
followed up the now classic Louden Up Now (2004) with the kind of rock
album that many had thought extinct. Muscular and nimble, smart and
funny, strange and endlessly sing-a-long-able, Myth Takes is a
sprawling experiment in pop songwriting and musical irreverence. From
the bass-heavy psychedelia of album opener "Myth Takes" straight
through to the lilting beatless ballad of the last track "Infinifold"
the album lives up to it's title as a rambunctious, complete work
wrapped in its own mystique.
(WARP 154 CD) CD.....$11.98

3 - The End Is Begun (special cd/dvd) CD (Metal Blade)
The progressive band Three (also known as 3) are back with a new album.  Last year's Wake Pig was picked up and re-released by Metal Blade Records to a lot of critical raves.
The End Is Begun continues the band's momentum. Three's sound
combines a lot of different elements: acoustic and metal guitars,
progressive and complex arrangements and melodic vocals. You'll hear
influences of everyone from Coheed and Cambria to Rush and genres such
as power pop, prog rock, Britpop, alt rock and metal.
The songs on the album are clever and catchy with acoustic
guitar being the main instrument. There are some harder edged metal
riffs that add a darker vibe to the songs. If you're looking for an
extreme album, this will not be up your alley. It's a mainstream appeal
record with big hooks and melodies, but has very interesting
arrangements and a lot of diversity. This will be one of those albums
that is a guilty pleasure for metal fans, but a pleasure nonetheless.

A.S.T. / DIE MONITR BATSS - Die Monitr Batss / A.S.T. (black vinyl) 7" VINYL (Dim Mak)
Die Monitr Batss, from Portland, Oregon, consist of Brace Paine from
Gossip and Deep Jail, Bronwyn from Deep Jail, Nate Preston from Sleet
Mute Night Mute and Chris Mendt. Their sound is authentically no-wave
alongside artists like Contortions, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and
more modern Boredoms. These are the two best songs they have records.
Just recently featured in fashion magazine I.D., A.S.T. are the first
letters of these three girls from Portland, Or. They are also in
another band, Sleet Mute Night Mute. Along the same lines as Sonic
Youth meets Mars. A.S.T. have strong references to musch of the late
70's Rough Trade catalog ala Kleenex, Raincoats, Slits
(DMR 062 7") 7" VINYL.....$3.48

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE - Magical Power From Mars CD (Important)
After endless emails and phone calls from stores, distributors,
and fans, The Acid Mothers Temple and Important Records

Magical Power comes housed with completely new front and
back art; no expense was spared on the psychedelic 3-D
lenticular front cover. This is the complete album available for

AMEBIX - No Sanctuary: The Spiderleg Recordings CD (Alternative Tentacles)
In the wake of Crass, the UK birthed a large scene of anarcho-punk
bands such as Subhumans, Rudimentary Peni, Flux Of Pink Indians, and,
perhaps the best known of all, Amebix. Their seminal Arise album, originally released by Alternative Tentacles
in 1985, remains one of the genre's ultimate statements, featuring
elements of Black Sabbath, Motorhead, and Venom infused with a healthy
dose of early punk's gutter grime and Crass' confrontational imagery.  Amebix became an archetype for the scene, an inspiration to hundreds of
bands worldwide including Sepultura (who even had their own album
called Arise) and Neurosis, among others. Prior to Arise,
Amebix released their early material on Flux Of Pink Indians' Spiderleg
imprint. These recordings came in extremely limited runs, and were
bootlegged to death in the ensuing years, while the original master
tapes languished in lockdown at Southern Studios. The band finally got
their tapes back nearly 25 years later, and now the songs are collected
officially for the first time.  No Sanctuary: The Spiderleg Recordings gathers the sought-after cult releases No Sanctuary, Who's The Enemy, and Winter.
Some of these tunes--such as "Winter" and "No Gods, No Masters"--are
undisputed classics in the punk world. Carefully remastered by Jello
Biafra and George Horn, these long-worshipped and revered recordings
are finally available again from Alternative Tentacles on both CD (in
digipak with booklet) and LP with bonus 7-inch. Tons of original
artwork was resurrected into a beautifully designed package by
long-time Alternative Tentacles collaborator and UK native John Yates.

ANALYST, THE - Summoning The Wretched CD (Inner Strength)
The Analyst formed in May 2006. The Analyst has been working hard
since its inception to make this band into something above and beyond
their imaginations. It's so easy to get caught up in whatever new
sub-genre of metal is cool this week, but true metal and musicianship
has always been on the frontline for The Analyst. "We don't play music
to see what breakdown will make the crowd do the most damage, we play
because we love creating music, and hopefully people will appreciate us
as a young, talented band." After playing countless shows The Analyst
signed to Innerstrength Records and is set to release their debut album
"Summoning the Wretched" on 5/20/2008. For fans of The Black Dahlia
Murder, All Shall Perish, Through the Eyes of the Dead, and Whitechapel.

ANTI-FLAG - A Benefit For Victims Of Violent Crime CD (AF)
This was out of print for a while so I just deleted it.  It's back in, and for a good cause so get it.
Fresh on the heels of the "War Sucks, Let's Party" tour, ANTI-FLAG
assembled this brand new EP to benefit a very important cause. This
past winter, bassist Chris #2's family experienced the horror of losing
a family member when his sister fell victim to violent crime, leaving
behind a young daughter and son. We all have our own gut reactions when
faced with tragedy. Anti-Flag’s was to put together this limited
edition benefit E.P. in hopes it would help others who have gone
through similar situations. The proceeds will be going to the The
Center for Victims of Violence and Crime (www.cvvc.org) as well as
educational bonds. "A Benefit for Victims of Violent Crime" features
five new Anti-Flag studio tracks along with five live songs recorded at
Pittsburgh's Mr. Smalls this past April. The CD pressing of "A Benefit
for Victims of Violent Crime" will be a limited pressing, and this
release will be available for download at all digital retailers
worldwide

ANTILLECTUAL - Waves 7" VINYL (Square Of Opposition)
I'm late jumping on this, as it came out this past summer specifically
for a US tour the band did. Antillectual are from the Netherlands, but
you'd never guess it from listening to them. The music sounds very West
Coast US. It's pretty melodic and poppy (but still fast and edgy) punk
rock. These guys are probably more kids who grew up on Fat Wreck Chords
stuff in the 90s and then got more overtly political and pissed off as
they got into darker stuff. Think of the angry elements of Propaghandi
with the more melodic elements of Strike Anywhere and you'll be
somewhere close to imagining what these guys sound like.
The
guitar-work is great, lots of cool riffs and interesting changes.
Actually, the musicianship is pretty good all across the board, and the
song structures are all pretty unique and well thought out. Some of the
vocals are a little annoying, as the singer gets into the whole nasely
thing from time to time, which takes away from the otherwise catchy
melodies he's singing. The closing track on side A, "Waves", is
definitely the stand-out, but not so much that the other songs are
boring.

BLACK MOUNTAIN - Stormy High (grey vinyl) 7" VINYL (Suicide Squeeze)
And once again...Golly, nice work, everyone. Stormy High”
is doomy – yet somehow bouncy?! – riffery over a martial beat, plus
jaunty Floydian keys that prog things up further… wowzers. Music for
longhairs: scalp & chin! Melodic sense comin’ out the nostrils, and
just enough technical know-how on display to impress without being Too
Much or Too Slick. There’s a general fidelity to the freakrock cause in
the Black Mountain camp,
but don’t ignore, chartwatching friends, the fact that those
male/female vox, especially on “Voices,” hew awful close to
NASA-country fuggers <a href="http://oakleyhall.net/site/">Oakley Hall, them being no slouch at writin’ a good one themselves. And certainly
don’t forget that neither of these tracks pop up in the same version
elsewhere, so pull whatever you need to pull to palm a copy. Got to
admit I never thought Black Mountain would top the rolling bong-nut
grooviness of <a href="http://www.scjag.com/mp3/jag/druganaut.mp3">“Druganaut,”
but they make a purty damn good run at it on both sides of this one,
and – know what? – the total package wins in the end. No bum notes here.

BOOK OF SHADOWS - You Were Seen In A Time Machine CD (Unfun)
Having been involved in the Austin Texas experimental music scene
for over 20 years, Carlton Crutcher and his band Book Of Shadows
creates music of the highest order, and so it proves on their latest
release "You Were Seen in a Time Machine". Ambient and eerie drone with
haunting female vocals calls out to those in the beyond. As a testament
to musical creation, Book of Shadows plays only improvisational pieces
and never twice. Carlton Crutcher (former founding member of the Austin
experimental group ST 37) and his wife Sharon Crutcher work along side
current members: Aaron Bennack, Eric Archer, Matthew Thies, Jonathan
Horne, Douglas Ferguson, Johnny Mccollom and Ralph White, to create
moving and powerfully magical music, uniquely transporting the listener
into beautiful and strange otherworldly dimensions.

BRAIN DRILL - Apocalyptic Feasting CD (Metal Blade)
Apocalyptic Feasting features lightning fast and razor sharp
riffs played at warp speed. Brain Drill's musical virtuosity and
technical skill is amazing. It's not often you talk about a band's
bassist, but Jeff Hughell plays a 7 string bass and uses a 10 finger
tapping technique that allows him to play incredibly fast.
Musicianship will only take you so far, you must also have the songs to
back it up. Otherwise, after a couple of listens you lose interest
quickly. Brain Drill has succeeded on that front as well. The songs,
while not melodic, have catchy riffs and a decent amount of diversity.
Dylan Ruskin's guitar wizardry is compelling and drummer Lord Marco
Pitruzzella (Vital Remains) plays at warp speed. - chad's heavy metal blog

BRAINSTORM - Downburst CD (Metal Blade)
Downburst is Brainstorm's seventh full-length, and continues
their signature sound, which is a blend of power and traditional metal.
Soaring melodies with sharp riffs and fast tempos mix with moderate
paced and heavier straight ahead metal and a power ballad or two.
Hooks are in ample supply, as are singalong choruses. Brainstorm's
songs are catchy and melodic, but there's enough of an edge to satisfy
those who need a little more extremity. Andy B. Franck is an excellent
vocalist, and his talents are put to good use as he is able to show his
range and power throughout the album. Downburst is a solid power metal CD, and if you haven't discovered Brainstorm yet, there's no time like the present. - chad's heavy metal blog

newer genres such as Biohazard and Hatebreed, then adding a dash of
good ole Slayer to round off the mix. Live at CBGBs in 2006.

CATARACT - Cataract CD (Metal Blade)
Cataract have evolved into one of Switzerland’s
premiere metal outfits and one of Europe’s constants in the modern
thrash and metalcore genres. Formed out of the ashes of Mine, Damage
I.D. and Cease, the band’s primary aim was to blend brutal moshes and
ferocious thrash into a new for of metal. What started off as a new
metallic breeze to the HC scene quickly turned into a storm when
the first recordings were released. After several releases on various
Labels such as Ferret Records in the USA and LifeForce Records in
Germany, Cataract caught the attention of Metal Blade Records and was
ultimately signed to their roster in 2004.
Since their inception, Cataract have worked constantly, locked in
stuffy rehearsal rooms, conquering stages all over the world, and
spreading their unique blend of metal. They’ve played hundreds of club
shows, been on tours such as the Hell On Earth and No Mercy packages,
various small tours throughout Europe and the USA, and countless
festival appearances. They’ve appeared at Germany’s With Full Force,
Wacken, Summer Breeze and Rock Hard Open Airs, Greenfield
(Switzerland’s biggest Rock Open Air), Belgium’s Dour Fest, the
American and French HellFest, the Czech Brutal Assault fest, etc.
Experience accumulated through years of pioneering the European scene
shows in their brutal riffs, their hateful vocals and crushing rhythms.
That is exactly what is expected by their huge fan base, which, thanks
to constant tours (Hell On Earth, X-Mas Festivals, supporting AMON
AMARTH) and festival gigs (Pressure Fest, With Full Force, Wacken,
Hellfest, Summer Breeze, etc.), is comprised of equal portions of metal
heads and HC fans. Both groups of fans, neither of which are
easily pleased, will revel in Cataract and have their eardrums blown
out by the monstrous sound courtesy of Antfarm Studios (Denmark).
Switzerland not only stands for cheese, chocolate, watches and dodgy
bank accounts, but most importantly… BRUTALITY!
The perfect soundtrack to a massacre is Cataract!

CRASS - Best Before 84 LP VINYL (Crass Records)
Serving as the final <a href="http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/music/artist/card/0,,418380,00.html" class="dlink">Crass
album ever, Best Before collects the band's many singles and some
rarities into a convenient collection. It covers everything from its
first single, "Do They Owe Us a Living?," to a version of that song
that concluded the group's final show ever at a benefit for Welsh
miners in 1984, with a series of shockingly good high points in
between. Generally avoiding the inclusion of their single tracks on
albums so as to avoid ripping off the fans, as well as allowing for
more immediate responses to outside situations, <a href="http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/music/artist/card/0,,418380,00.html" class="dlink">Crass
made the pointed, questioning protest song its own work of art,
avoiding easy answers as they went. While the earliest tracks show the
band as little more than loud, thinly recorded and somewhat
run-of-the-mill punk with an ear for a focused rant or two, by the time
the harrowing "Reality Asylum" was composed in 1979, <a href="http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/music/artist/card/0,,418380,00.html" class="dlink">Crass
had a much more individual approach going. The song, with what sounds
like De Vivre handling the blunt, anti-Christian spoken word vocals,
mixes musique concrète and found-sound snippets with spacious,
echoing elements and low, strange drones. A more individual approach to
what "punk" was supposed to be couldn't easily be found. There are
straightforward full-band eruptions that don't stop: the astonishing
rip on the political hypocrisy of bands like the Clash, "Bloody
Revolutions," or "Sheep Farming in the Falklands," appearing in both
extant versions and packaging a revulsion of the war there into an
obscenely articulate blast. Other more avant-garde tracks as "Shaved
Women" and the scabrous "Nagasaki Nightmare" find them experimenting
all the more. Besides all the lyrics, the lengthy booklet contains an
impassioned band autobiography that details the group's goals and
hopes, their successes, and sometimes cruel failures. As an overview
and as an example of politicized music taken to its fullest extent,
Best Before remains a worthy, unique release. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music

CRASS - Christ The Album LP VINYL (Crass Records)
Released with unplanned irony as the Falklands War raged -- an event
that would provide grist for the band's eventual masterwork, Yes Sir I
Will -- Christ, another two-album half-studio/half-live set like
Stations of the Crass, once again aims to take no prisoners. Ratcheting
up the continued "leave no stone unturned" lyrical approach that
characterized the group from the start, <a href="http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/music/artist/card/0,,418380,00.html" class="dlink">Crass
again sounds like the group's about to explode in eight million
directions. Ignorant takes over the lead vocal role again, his rough
ramalama bitterly leading the charge against the loathed Thatcher
government and the society that allowed it to come into power.
Libertine, here appearing as Peeve Libido, adds backing vocals while De
Vivre takes the lead on "Birth Control" and "Sentiment." Free's guitar
work roars along with the usual vim, as does the Pete Wright aka Sybil
Right/Rimbaud rhythm section, while continual spiking of the <a itxtdid="5906542" target="_blank" href="http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/store/artist/album/0,,70219,00.html#" style="border-bottom: 0.075em solid darkgreen ! important; font-weight: normal ! important; font-size: 100% ! important; text-decoration: underline ! important; padding-bottom: 1px ! important; color: darkgreen ! important; background-color: transparent ! important;" classname="iAs" class="iAs">musical
punch via production or sonic collages, or even almost power pop
catchiness at points, prevents things from being one note. "Reality
Whitewash" even has a swelling string and brass combination to propel
it along. Mock and real found-sound bites, from official statements to
slams at <a href="http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/music/artist/card/0,,418380,00.html" class="dlink">Crass
itself, pepper the studio side as bridges between songs or concurrently
running elements of the tunes themselves. While hints had always been
present in earlier songs, <a href="http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/music/artist/card/0,,418380,00.html" class="dlink">Crass
collectively starts wearing their hearts on their sleeves even more
than before; "I Know There Is Love" is another all-encompassing
rejection of societal roles in favor of a real, untainted feeling, at
once impolite and passionate. The live material, recorded at a June
1981 show, is interspersed with a variety of material from other
sources, including more found-sound/media snippets and, in an
interesting nod to the past, two cuts from the group's very first time
in a studio. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

DEATH IN JUNE - Phoenix Has Risen CD (Pid)
This CD is a very obscure one and was first
suspected to be a bootleg- It's NOT! Named after the scratched message
on Death in June's very first vinyl release (`Heaven Street' 12" 1981),
this CD comes from the Japanese Label `Supernatual Organisation Discs',
the same label that released CURRENT 93's LP `Earth Covers Earth' in
1988. The funny thing about this release is: It's brand new but it
bears the year 1999 on the back sleeve - which was obviously done by
purpose, in order to confuse people even more about the real background
of this CD. In fact the CD was conceived and put together by Douglas P.
himself, but without wanting to know certain people about it. The CD
contains most probably the earliest Death in June recording EVER
released - a 8-tracks `Rehearsal Tape' from 1981, with alternative
demo-versions of tracks, of which most were later published on the 12"
`Heaven Street' and the album `The Guilty have no pride' (1983). Death
in June at this early stage were Douglas P., Tony Wakeford and Patrick
Leagas. Also included are 8 additional tracks, recorded live at `The
Living Room' in London on September 9 1983. The booklet contains some
amazing photos (among others `live at The Fridge' from the very early
days of Death in June.

ELEH / SUN CIRCLE - Eleh / Sun Circle (180 gram black vinyl) LP VINYL (Important)
Essential limited edition 180-gram vinyl release pressed in an edition of 500 copies with letterpressed
jackets. Eleh’s pure analog drones are a perfect complement to Sun Circle’s ecstatic
high-volume compositions. Eleh’s track is a slight departure from the sub-sonic bass-heavy drones
of their first two records. This time around there is more emphasis on a glistening shimmer. Sun
Circle’s Important debut is psychoacoustic minimalism meets psychedelic maximalism: ecstatic
high-volume drones, long-form trance musics, and peace noise performed with bowed strings,
voices, organs, percussion, and world instruments.
“[Eleh] harkens back to the academic laboratory conditions of 1960s minimalism. But its forensic
exploration of the limits of bass perception (and reproduction) has uncannily contemporary
echoes.” — The Wire  *********THIS RECORD IS ALREADY OUT OF PRINT DISTRO'S HAVE THE FINAL COPIES**********

EPICUREAN - A Consequence Of Design CD (Metal Blade)
Epicurean formed in Minneapolis in 2004. The six-piece honed their
skills onstage, combining progressive metal and Euro-metal with a
mainstream accessibility and an explosive live show. The band recorded
a 3-track demo soon after, aggressively touring and shopping the tape
around the northwest for the next several months.
In 2005, they got studio time with producer Ari to work on their first
full-length. Upon its completion, Epicurean had yet to score a record
deal, so they continued their hectic touring schedule, hoping to reach
the right person. This ethic paid off, as it brought them to their
current management company, HM, who passed their completed album to
Metal Blade Records. Metal Blade paid for the band to remaster the set
in 2007 with producer Don Debiase.

ESTATIC SUNSHINE - Way CD (Cardboard)
The second full length by Ecstatic Sunshine is an album of skewed
minimalism and true, uplifting positivity. Recorded in Summer/Fall 2007,
Way stretches to a point fully beyond expectation. The riffs that ES
explored in the past are deconstructed, reconsidered, effected, and
processed into melodic noise and chiming rhythm.
“One of the best introductions to oddball music you could hope for …
guitar melodies—guitar riffs even—arc above ambient sounds and
substrata rhythms, built from an effects rack rather than a laptop — and
the sun reappears from the sludge in distinctly pretty guitar lines that
twist and swirl into a gorgeous finish.” — Baltimore City Paper
“The disciplined timing and deliberate restriction to small tonal palettes
recalled vintage Steve Reich, and a noticeably all-American strain (their
unavoidable country roots) frequently gave the overall sound a vibe like
a hoedown in a parallel universe. In this way, they tip their hats to guitar
visionaries such as John Fahey.” — LA Weekly
“They could actually be Ebenezer Obey discovering Lightning Bolt
or a Rhys Chatham tribute band formed by subway mice, but whatever
they are Ecstatic Sunshine have formulated a delightful riposte to the
underground’s predilection for sweaty noise-offs.” — Plan B
“Still a perfectly apt band name for these two freaky guitar pickers … who
practically snort sunshine and then shoot it out their hands.” — Paper Thin Walls
“Ecstatic Sunshine is a group comprised of two guys who play guitars,
but please note that it’s not just your average lackadaisical coffeehouse-style
busking … it’s all about the riffs as the two players rip through section after
section in their slightly math-like electric guitar fueled songs.” — Almost Cool
“While some might remember ES as a delicate, guitar-leaning project based
in unconventional melody, the outfit, now numbering three members and
only one on guitar, have moved towards a loop-heavy wall of noise that,
while still maintaining Matt Papich’s bright, tumbling guitar melodies,
seems to have become a band more concerned with textures and intensity.”

GNAW THEIR TONGUES - An Epiphanic Vomiting CD (Crucial Blast)
Gnaw Their Tongues, an enigmatic project from the Netherlands
that has wowed fans of messed-up heaviosity with the phenomenal Reeked,
Pained and Shuddering CD that was released on Paradigms along with a
host of super-limited CDR and cassette releases, is joining the Crucial
Blast roster for the CD release of the new full length An Epiphanic
Vomiting Of Blood, which was released as a limited edition vinyl
release at the beginning of 2008 on Burning World Records. This
undefinable mass of black amorphic horror is one of the most intense
listens we've engaged in recently, a nihilistic pit of howling
orchestral strings and blackened abstract doom, operatic female voices
plunging into a fetid sewer of filth and blackness, equal parts avant
black metal and splattered sludge and symphonic horror movie score. An
overwhelming deathscape scrawled in jagged figures across pieces like
"My body is not a vessel, nor a temple. It's a repulsive pile of
sickness" or "Sawn asunder and left for the beasts", and flecked with
moments of unbelievably crushing beauty that may surprise fans of Gnaw
Their Tongue's previous work.

Phallus was released on VHS in 1992, and DVD in 1999, but has
been out of print in either format since 2002 (some sources give 1994
as the year for the VHS). Metal Blade and Slave Pit both carry the
remaining VHS copies, and neither have the DVD. There is some confusion
as to who actually owns the rights to this film, with Metal Blade
saying that Slave Pit is the owner (and that they are in the
re-negotiation process), and Slave Pit stating the exact opposite.
Because of this, copies of both have been hard to find and has led to some cases of people selling them for as much as $120.0

HATE ETERNAL - Fury And Flames CD (Metal Blade)
Guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/producer Erik Rutan has recruited an
entirely new Hate Eternal lineup for their latest CD. Coming onboard
are Cannibal Corpse bassist Alex Webster along with second guitarist
Shaune Kelley and drummer Jade Simonetto. Fury And Flames is dedicated to Jared Anderson, Rutan's close friend and former bandmate who passed away in 2006.
Fury And Flames is an unrelenting barrage of crushing death
metal devastation. The songs are monstrously heavy and brutal, played
with great technical skill. The dual guitars sound great, and Webster
is a virtuoso on the bass guitar. In death metal the drums are
especially important, and Simonetto's style is fast and thunderous.  - chad's heavy metal blog

According to Hot Cross: Due to mastering snafus some where released with Hot Cross on both sides with side B being the shitty master.  Out then distributor had already assembled about 100 or so.  so they stuffed the correct version of the 7" with the dooty one and a few confused chaps thought this was a doube 7".  Some people think that these versions are neat and collectable but we chalk them up as a freak up.
This here is that freak up record with Hot Cross on both sides.  Roubghly 100 of these saw the light of the day through Ebullition as a double 7" with the og. packaging the majority of the rest were returned to the plant.  It's unclear how many of these exist.  This is from a found box of 90.  It's believed a total of 300 copies were pressed on orange vinyl.

JOAN OF ARC - Boo! Human CD (Polyvinyl)
Boo Human is the product of
a collaborative effort in every sense of the word. Combining one week
of studio time, a stack of songs and a sign-up sheet allowing
participants to drop in whenever they could, each track is as wildly
different and uniquely constructed as the groups who produced them. The
combination of 14 musicians whose previous collaborations include Wilco, Iron & Wine, Bonnie Prince Billy, Beth Orton and Prefuse 73
yields a truly diverse record that is as intense as it is intimate.
Marked by intricate guitar melodies, noncognitive wailing and tense
instrumentals, Boo! Human is interestingly enough, Joan Of Arc's most accessible, cohesive album since 1997’s How Memory Works. From the addictively syncopated “Laughter Reflected Back” to the unignorable, poetic “9/11 2," Joan Of Arc truly proves that doing it their way is the right way.

JOHN PHILLIPS - Wolfking Of L.A. LP VINYL (Harte)
Front Cover Sticker: Heavy vinyl reissue of ex-Mamas & Papas mastermind John
Phillips. Debut solo album produced by the legendary Lou Adler from a new analog to
digital transfer from the original mix tape.
Features many of the session musicians who contributed to the success of The Mamas
& The Papas, Elvis Presley, and Ricky Nelson.
In 1969, when John Phillips was moving past The Mamas & The Papas, he assembled
a collection of songs at his home studio that would eventually become his first solo album,
the only one to be released during his lifetime. It is an album reflective of the changing era,
and the ever-changing composer and arranger.

KILLS, THE - Black Rooster 12" VINYL (Dim Mak)
I actually dig this band.  I used to love Discount as well.  I always had a crush of the woman in this band.  Ever since I saw Discount and D4 at 403 Chaos in FL.  She had a Bikini Kill patch on her pants and that was enough to swoon me away.  Anyway, this sounds nothing like Discount.  Reminds me of a sub par Velvet Underground or something.  Pretty dirty sounding, like shit you'd wanna listen to and blow rails of coke to, then be all gacked out of your head and freaking out later on realizing that you just blew a 1/4 ounce of coke up your nose and you're $200.00 in the hole and your life is a mess and you wanna just like freak your girlfriend or boyfriend to get the bugs out of your system but you got coke dick and you can't.  Like that but on record.

KING DIAMOND - Them (black 180 gram vinyl) LP VINYL (180 GRAM) (Roadrunner Vinyl)
This was the only band when I was a kid that my mom liked.  I don't know why.  - Jamie
KING
DIAMOND is back again with another horror story that is created from
the hole that once held his soul. With his lofty and haunting voice the
King outlines the story throughout this CD.
<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;">This
CD is full of catchy guitar hooks and solos. The Kings’ voice is as
good as ever with his signature multiple layer harmonies to add a
pseudo satanic/horror feel to the songs. Andy LaRoque and Pete Blakk
are great guitar players and seemingly underrated in the normal guitar
circles in what they do. Throughout the CD I hear great homage being
paid to the sound of old JUDAS PRIEST.
If
I had to list songs that I particularly thought were considered
favourites on “Them” I would be hard-pressed to do so. I must admit
though I do like the arrangement in “Mother’s Getting Weaker” and
“Tea”. The little interludes between the songs like “Out From the
Asylum” and “Phone Call” are amazing, they set the mood for the
upcoming song

KOENJIHYAKKEI - Hundred Sights Of Koenji CD (Skin Graft)
For the first time ever, Skin Graft Records proudly presents
Koenjihyakkei’s legendary debut album, Hundred Sights of Koenji, to
western listeners. With the original issue on Japan’s God Mountain label
largely unheard and fetching enormous prices on the collector’s market,
Hundred Sights of Koenji returns to print in a deluxe remastered edition.
Originally released in 1994, it includes the full RUINS line-up of Yoshida
Tatsuya, Masuda Ryuichi, Kubota Aki, and Kuwahara Shigekazu
for a futuristic journey to those hallowed fields of yore. Koenjihyakkei is
Area and ELP at their most excessive, Deus Ex Machina with tempo
changes multiplied by 100, and Magma at their Orff-ian choral, fusion
jazz, overcharged gospel peak. Here begins a new chapter in the storied
Zeuhl scene, where foreign tongues, interplanetary wars, and inhuman
technique rule the roost.
“Not only the most brilliant of all of contemporary Japanese bands,
but perhaps the greatest group currently operating in the world.” —
Alternative Press
“No irony here: this rocks with the teeth and heart to cut through the
‘scenes’ and the ‘overground’ like a knife. … Koenjihyakkei may go down
as Tatsuya Yoshida’s greatest achievement: the most perfect fusion of
straight prog, the avant-garde, and HC punk. Amen.” — Pitchfork

farfisa, a live dj, guitar, voices and beats to make their music. Their
sound touches on conceptual garage, digital anthemic, political sadness

LOREN CONNORS - As Roses Bow: Collected Airs 1992-2002 2xCD (Family Vineyard)
As Roses Bow is
an assembly of Loren Connors’ most melodically rich and stunning
miniature compositions. These forty-five pieces are
Connors’ complete airs culled from ten albums (eight that are out of
print) and two singles, including his groundbreaking Hell’s Kitchen
Park (Black Label, 1993), the rare Moonyean (Road Cone, 1994), obscure
titles like St. Vincent’s Newsboy Home (Item Recordings,

entire critically heralded Airs (Road Cone 1999) is re-mastered

M. WARD - Transistor Radio LP VINYL (Merge)
Portland, Oregon's M. Ward describes his fourth full-length
release, ‘Transistor Radio’ as a collection of songs "about childhood
memories of a utopian radio power…" and dedicates the album to "the
last of the remaining independent radio stations." Opening with a
beautiful John Fahey-esque instrumental rendition of the Beach Boys'
"You Still Believe in Me," ‘Transistor Radio’ continues down a dusty
well-worn road full of timeless, uniquely American stories. Ward's
distinctly weathered voice and intricate guitar playing are helped
along with an impressive group of guests incuding Jim James (My Morning
Jacket), Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) and Jordan
Hudson (The Thermals).

MASATO TANAKA / POCKET GALLOWS - Masato Tanaka / Pocket Gallows LP VINYL (Square Of Opposition)
Square of Opposition Records has teamed up two new bands, or at least
two that are new to me team up for a split 12” LP. Masato Tanaka starts
things off. Their side of the split contains nine tracks. Over the
course of these songs the trio incorporate the worlds of metal, grind,
and punk into one. But the most identifiable aspect of the band's music
is their use of keys. The resulting sound of all this being thrown
together is a mixture of early Mr. Bungle and a death metal version of
The Blood Brothers… if you can imagine that.
Pocket Gallows occupies the flip side and delivers three songs. Each of these songs
encompasses an entirely different style. One minute the band is
blasting through a chaotic metalcore attack, the next they're
delivering a low-end droning metal opus. I must say I prefer the latter.
There is a lot offered up on this split LP, and it took a few listens to absorb it. - scene point blank

MENACE RUINE - Cult Of Ruins CD (Alien 8)
Hailing from Quebec, this duo is cloaked in mystery. Since the release of their blazing
self-produced demo, In Vulva Infernum, they have allowed themselves to perform live and
have quickly risen to the top of the food chain in Montreal. On Cult of Ruins, the listener
is subjected to a blend of super-intense sound layered with horrific howls and relentless
blast beats, only to then be confronted with a melodic, haunting, ambient approach that
retains immense power. In this respect, Menace Ruine bears some resemblance to the
mysterious French post-black metal horde Deathspell Omega, who has become famous
for juxtaposing ambient music with absolutely crushing metal. Coinciding with this release,
Menace Ruine will reissue their debut on cassette with the ultra-cult label Tour de
Garde, responsible for releases by the likes of Ash Pool and Pagan Hellfire.

MERCYFUL FATE - Melissa (black 180 gram vinyl) LP VINYL (180 GRAM) (Roadrunner Vinyl)
"Melissa" is the name of a skull King Diamond used to carry on
stage, and also a fictional deceased witch that appears in three songs.
Before the recordings of the album Melissa
King Diamond had acquired a human skeleton that he named "Melissa". He
used the femur bones to make his trademark microphone handle. The skull
was apparently stolen during a show in the Netherlands.
The skull was inspiration behind the album, Melissa <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melissa_%28album%29" title="Melissa (album)">,
and the title track of the album is very different from the rest of the
album, as it is much slower than the other songs (which are speedier
and more aggressive). The lyrics tell of a male protagonist (usually
identified as King Diamond himself by fans) who lost the love of his
life, who was a witch who was burnt at the stake by a Catholic Priest.
The story builds itself up around the emotions of the protagonist, who
first feels sadness and uncertainty, hope for her to still be alive,
and then rage over his loss. He swears revenge on the priest who burnt
her, proclaiming that he must die in the name of hell. The song ends
with a whisper that hints Melissa's spirit is still with the
protagonist.
The second song Melissa appears on is on the album Don't Break the Oath in the song "Come to the Sabbath", once again at the climax of the album. The lyrics tell about a Satanic Coven holding a sabbath,
in which the protagonist emerges to perform a ritual to "put an evil
curse on the priest who took the life of Melissa". Though she is not
the focus of the lyrics this time, because of her mention the song is
known as a "Melissa song". Additionally, one of the main characters on
the King Diamond's album Them was named "Missy", which is a common diminutive of Melissa.
The final song Melissa appears in is on Mercyful Fate's reunion album In the Shadows
on the song "Is That You, Melissa?". The lyrics tell of the protagonist
once again in sorrow about the loss of his love. He begins to hear her
voice and goes to the coven to have them perform a ritual to speak with her ghost.
The coven objects, saying that it is against the rules. The protagonist
is visited by Melissa's spirit who shares a kiss with the protagonist.
The subject of the song is argued by some; one side says the lyrics are
not a continuation of the Melissa story but a tribute by the band to
their past, while the other side sees it as the end of the Melissa
story. It is widely accepted that she is the girl on the album cover of
"In the Shadows" facing the old oak tree<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak_tree" class="mw-redirect" title="Oak tree">. After In the Shadows, Melissa has not been mentioned any more in both lyrics and artwork.

MISFITS, THE - Collection 2 LP VINYL (Caroline)
The real reason for the Misfits' prolonged life-after-death is that
underneath the three-chord bluster, campy imagery, and pancake makeup
there are some great, catchy, pop-hook-driven tunes. Not to mention
that no one can sing "whoaah-whoaaah-whoooooaaah!" like the
Elvis-impersonating, golden-throated superboy Danzig. But even the most
die-hard Misfits freak must surely tire of listening to version after
version--7-inch take, live recording, previously unreleased demo--of
two-minute punk songs like "We Are 138," "Rat Fink," "Halloween," and
"Braineaters" off the bazillion bootlegs and dozen-plus authorized
releases from this short-lived act. Collection II
does compile some of the Misfits' most collectible vinyl artifacts,
like the groovy "Cough/Cool" single. But it's recommended for fans
only, who probably already own more than one copy. --Mike McGonigal

NADJA - Touched  CD (Alien 8)
The avant metal
genre has really taken off over the last couple of years, and while
some projects may suffer from its over-saturation, Nadja’s versatility
will allow it to escape this fate. Aidan Baker, the project’s founder,
is an insanely prolific musician under his own name, releasing solo
works for such prestigious labels as Germany’s Die Stadt as well
countless CD and CD-R releases all over the world. Leah
Buckareff rounds out the band on bass guitar and backing vocals.
While
credit is owed to the likes of pioneering legends Earth and current
kingpins Sunn O))) & Boris for defining the genre, Nadja takes more
inspiration from artists hailing from the dark ambient and electronica
fields. Passages on this latest release can be compared to saturated
wall-of-ambient-noise perfected by the likes of Tim Hecker and Fennesz
or Justin K. Broadrick’s Jesu project.
Likeearlier release Truth Becomes Death, Touched is ambient music being
pushed to its breaking point, yet the overall feel is slightly gentler.
Parts of the album feature the use of clean, undistorted vocals–rather
unique in the genre–hinting at the sounds of such bands as Codeine,
Swans, or Joe Preston’s Thrones project.
In avery short time, Nadja has established itself as a band to watch due to
its work ethic, prolific output, and live performances. In the past
year, Nadja has managed to tour with (or open for) ISIS, Khanate, Tim
Hecker, Troum, Fear Falls Burning, Helios Creed, and The End, among
others.
“Imagine Jesu, but dosed to the gills on Prozac, a shiny happy Godfleshian
dirge, or a My Bloody Valentine riff looped and repeated forever,
underpinned by some Can drum loop at 16 rpm, or a Teenage Filmstars 45
played at 33. This is epic ultradoom metal, but with the metal replaced
by soft billowy clouds of fuzzy distortion, the howling fury twisted
into dreamlike tranquility, the blasting beats pulled apart and
sprinkled here and there like percussive raindrops. This is as soft and
pretty as a dirge-y drone can get while still retaining its
inherent doomic mass. Utter and absolute loveliness drenched in a thick
patina of crushing heaviness. Impossible but perfect.” – Aquarius Records

NEAERA - Armamentarium CD (Metal Blade)
<span id="intelliText"><font style="font-size: 12px;">
Neaera was formed in Germany in 2003 by guitarist Tobias Buck as a
side-project for his then-current band Malzan. Buck assembled drummer
Sebastian Heldt, vocalist Benny Hilleke and bassist Benjamin Donath
(also of Malzan) to fill out his band, who were then going by the name
The Ninth Gate. A second guitarist, Stefan Keller (also of Malzan,
which had by then imploded), was added shortly after, and the band
re-wrote much of their original material to incorporate this new,
beefed-up line-up.
The Ninth Gate recorded a demo album in early 2004, which gained them
notice almost immediately by Metal Blade Records. The recording
contract necessitated a name change, so the group decided on Neaera, a
mythical Greek slave. The newly named five-piece hit the studio in the
last months of 2004 to record their debut.
The Rising Tide Of Oblivion was released through Metal Blade in
March of 2005. The set of death metal was well-received by critics and
kicked off a long season of touring for Neaera that would take the band
around the world. In early 2006, the band returned to the studio to
record their anticipated follow-up.
Let The Tempest Come hit streets in the spring of 2006, another
blistering set of black metal with nods to HC. More great reviews
and touring followed that year. Neaera also spent most of 2007
dedicated almost entirely to touring (though guitarist Keller was
forced to miss a few shows - he was replaced live by Heaven Shall
Burn’s Alexander Dietz), as the band graduated to larger and larger
venues.

PEDRO THE LION - Winners Never Quit LP VINYL (Jade Tree)

narrative tales of past experiences.

PITCH BLACK FORECAST - Absentee (feat. Gene Hoglan!) CD (Fractured Transmitter)
A brutal slab of metal concocted by Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young
Lad, Death, Dark Angel) and J. Popson (Mushroomhead, In Cold Blood).
Mixing all forms of metal with a bit of HC and conscience. This
release tells tales of loss and heartbreak along with biting social
commentary. It truly is a lighthouse for the lost and a beacon for the
broken.

PREFUSE 73 - Extinguished CD (Warp)
Those of you who found Scott Herren's last full-length outing as
Prefuse 73 a bit disjointed, a tad over-ambitious, will be pleased to
drop into this much tighter collection of out-takes, re-workings and
edits for this 23-track, 40 minute long Mini-Album excursion for Warp.
Full of short segments, interludes and cut-ups weaving in and out of
lengthier pieces, "Extinguished" is a much more consistant effort from
Herren. The opening "Suite for the way things change" emulates DJ
shadows approach to sectioned arrangements, although with much more
derranged samples and toys at its disposal. Veering from skewed string
edits to the obligatory vocal snip, the movement flows into stutterd
beats, time-changes and a more organic selection of drums towards its
end. The demented scuzz funkline of "I Got No Time" deploys a big nod
of approval towards Dabrye's focus on electric structures and 100 ton
beats to blinding effect - knowing to end itself sweetly at the 1.30
minute mark for maximum impact. "Robot Snares", one of the longer
tracks on offer at a staggering 3:17 minutes, is a much more
traditional Prefuse outing, piano slaps and melodic vocal enhancements
bringing to life a more traditional "song" vibe, done the Prefuse way,
of course. Good work from artist an label - a useful, addictive
alternative / appendix to its much more sprawling older brother - "One
Word Extinguisher". Really good fun.

RAILHED - Tarantella LP VINYL (Jade Tree)
For a band that didn't exist much further past the release of this,
their only full-length record, RAILHED sure managed to cover a
groundswell of territory. It's emotive HC, not unlike that of
their neighbors on Beecher Street, threaded by deeply personal lyrics
and a pull between downright anthemic riffing and melancholy chord
progression - a dichotomy that presents only part of the reason why
this record can hardly be mired in any one genre. And again, ahem,
we're not just saying that.

RIDDLE OF STEEL - 1985 CD (Ascetic)
After two years and hundreds of live shows, Riddle of Steel finally return with their
anxiously awaited third album, 1985—a soaring, victorious rock gem. For fans of QOTSA,
Van Halen, and The Police, 1985 feels like an exciting album coming out at an exciting
time. Expertly recorded by Paul Malinowski (Shiner, Open Hand), 1985 shines every
minute, showcasing all of the band’s strengths. This is the band’s first recording to feature
the same lineup as its predecessor, and it shows. The quick and cagey feel of Got This Feelin’
is still here, but the track-to-track variety is even sharper. Each song’s hooks jump out
upon first listen and stay in your head forever, whether it’s the laid-back street cruise of
opener “John Frum,” the enormous rock swagger of “Loose Talk,” the rich-textured and
mellow “This Van Burns Love,” or the fierce flame-throwing “Total Cougar.” 1985 doesn’t
ask for your approval. It rocks as if it already has it.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES - Station CD (Suicide Squeeze)
Russian Circles is a three piece post punk band that comes from Chicago, IL. Their newest album, Station,
is their 3rd release to date and first LP with Suicide Squeeze Records.
With only guitars, bass, and drums the band manages to cover much more
territory than would be suspected. Incorporating all sorts of
harmonies, dynamics, and productions tricks, Russian Circles' Station is honestly much more than meets the ears.
Before flexing its muscles, Russian Circles shows its delicate side
with 'Champaign'. Entirely instrumental, the song's backbone is it's
elaborate harmonies which weave into and out of note by note
decipherability. Clean tones prevail here and there is nothing not to
enjoy. 'Harper Lewis' begins with an unattended rock beat before it is
accompanied by a bass that is heavily distorted. The song breaks stride
when the guitar joins, going from a march to a ski-daddle. Around 2:45
seconds Station shows its truest colors. This "metalesque" is short
lived for good reason; Circles avoids becoming lopsided.
Station sounds a lot like a bunch of musicians that have
everything going for them except for vocals. Where as vocals are
completely absent from the record, there is no certainty that it would
even benefit the overall sound. Russian Circles is dependent upon their
musicianship and there is no weak link. By the time I got to the end of
Station, I was thinking to myself that it would probably make
for an incredible live performance. There is a lot of room for
improvisation with a record like this and I have no doubt that Russian
Circles delivers.

SCOTT KELLY - The Wake CD (Neurot)
In James Joyce's Dublin, the streets inhale and exhale an Irishness
that is so fundamentally elemental that it's more a part of the
landscape than the actual landscape-- which is to say: his books are
more real than the real space they describe. And so it is with Scott Kelly, great guitar griot and founder of Neurosis, and his Wake. Or The Wake,
to be precise. Its reality supersedes the place, the space, and the
particulars that gave birth to it. Mixing imagery that borders on a
bold and stark contemplation of the limits of our earthly existence via
our failed loves, efforts, conceits, and even our less-than-noble other
failures (blissfully unspecified and probably unnecessary to have them
specified: if you're alive, the blanks are easy enough to fill in), The Wake,
with its lion-in-the-winter woe, wrenches the almost inexpressibly sad
into seven songs that sound like what you hear when you're just about
to not hear anything anymore.
"The weather never changes in my world." Goddamned right.
With only an acoustic guitar and his voice, Kelly crams the lilt, lift,
and longing of several lives well lived into five-some-odd minutes of
every song. Not only would this record not have been possible at any
other point in his life-- or ours, for that matter-- than now, it also
seems to suggest the shape of beyond-now: thin and on fire.
Enjoy it. Time is short.  --Eugene S. Robinson

SECRET SHINE - All Of The Stars CD (Clairecords)
All of the Stars is Secret Shine’s second studio album, and their first in
fourteen years. The band took an unscheduled nine-year break before
returning in 2004 with the release of their back catalog on Clairecords,
followed by two emphatically received EPs of new material in 2006 and live
shows in Europe and America.
Although it could sit comfortably alongside shoegaze classics like
Slowdive’s Souvlaki, My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, and The Pale
Saints’ The Comforts of Madness, All of the Stars is a unique treasure and
possibly the new wave of “stargaze.”
“Armed with the ethereal mystery of the Cocteau Twins and the
crunchy guitars of Lush, Secret Shine’s songs come in striking musical
layers … a stirring and melodic blend of shoegazing bliss.” — Amplifier
“Songs crescendo, shake, and shudder like a dense, hot mist falling on your
shoulders, filling your head with visions of vistas and weightless elation.
It’s flat-out majestic on the orchestral strings … like a trip by rail through
snowy mountain ranges.” — Big Takeover
“Immense swirling soundscapes that reek of the nostalgia of Slowdive but
bristle with the undoubted influence of contemporaries Sigur Rós and
Mogwai provide the orchestral backdrop to the mesmerizing ethereal
boy-girl vocal harmonies. Irrepressibly gorgeous.” — Tasty Fanzine

SHY CHILD - Noise Won't Stop CD (Kill Rock Stars)
Shy Child are the sound of circuits shorting, resistors blowing, neon
lights fizzing and videophones ringing off the hook.. Highlights from
the Chris Zane-produced LP include 'Drop The Phone' which has been
instantly added to Triple J on its first week of promo, the fruity,
filthy 'Kick Drum' featuring Philly rapper Spank Rock; the epic,
Eno-esque 'What's It Feel Like?'; the bouncy otaku-funk of 'Generation
Y (We Got It)', graced by the soulful vocals of Stephanie McKay; and
the spectral shuffle-stomp of 'Astronaut'. 'Noise Won't Stop' never
sounds anything less than enormous, quite a feat for a two-man band.
Overall, it's an album that any so-called 'new rave' band would kill to
have made.

SOILENT GREEN - Inevitable Collapse In The Presence Of Conviction CD (Metal Blade)
I love this band, and the dudes in it.  They took an old band of mine out on tour, and their fans called us faggots, sat down while we played, left the room, ignored us, and wanted to fight once or twice.  - Jamie  Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction marks a new
chapter for Soilent Green. After releasing a few albums on Relapse
Records, the N.O.L.A. super group; which consists of Eyehategod,
Goatwhore and Crowbar members, has found a new home on Metal Blade.
Regardless of the group jumping ship to Metal Blade, Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction
displays all the familiar features associated with the group. This is
still the same ole’ southern swamp groove and grind laid out in their
1995 debut full-length, Pussysoul.
Silent’s latest album contains little surprises in its well-worn formula, but after
twenty years as a band, this album is a testament to the band’s
perseverance. The consistency of guitarist Brian Patton, vocalist Ben
Falgoust and drummer Tommy Buckley has led to a finely-honed product.
Another improvement comes in the production values. They made a wise
choice in bringing Erik Rutan for a second round, as Rutan previously
worked with the band on their last album Confrontation.  The clear production on Inevitable Collapse makes the album friendlier on the ears, which may also explain a greater ease in discriminating Falgoust’s lyrics.
The boys from the bayou also show considerable improvements in the song
writing department. Tommy Buckley’s vivacious drumming keeps the group
working in cohesion. His role is especially important when considering
the numerous temple changes experienced in each track. Regardless of
the sharp twists and turns, Patton and Crochet check his every flick of
the wrist. Buckley’s blasts during the grind parts impress, but his
furious fills during transitional moments impress the most.
Falgoust’s scorching voice appropriates the aggressive tone transmitted in the
band’s music, but relates much better in a live setting. Falgoust’s
manic energy is a bullet point for catching the band on tour, but is
the least impressive facet of a domestic listen. The guitar riffs and
bombastic drums rule the day on a home or car stereo. “Antioxidant” is
a fine example of the band’s expertise on the subject of musical
transition. This track includes punk/grind grooves, southern blues
string work, blasting grind, guttural death growls swamped in doom
chords and even a Steve Harris-like bass solo. Acoustic guitars open
“Love Sick” and “In the Same Breath,” allowing listeners to heal their
bruises before being assaulted by another Buckley flurry.
Soilent Green is living proof that perseverance can indeed be rewarding. The
group has experienced many hardships including the death of two members
(Scott Williams and Glen Rambo), numerous hurricanes, lineup changes,
lack of tour support and a van accident while on tour. After two
decades, though, three-fourths of the band remains, and the group has a
new record contract that has led to more time on the road. Soilent
Green obviously recognizes this is their time, and they are not going
to let it slip away because Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction shows the band at their best. - blistering.com

SPIRES THAT IN THE SUNSET RISE - Curse The Traced Bird CD (Secret Eye)
Spires That in the Sunset Rise is an all-female otherworldly band from
Chicago whose musical palette includes the spike fiddle, cello, bul bul
tarang, various drums and bells, ecstatic yelps and cackles, and all manner
of plectra. Their eclectic outsider sound has drawn repeated comparisons
to Comus, Current 93, The Ex, and The Raincoats. They have toured
Europe and the US many times, performing alongside such artists as
Josephine Foster, Espers, MV/EE, Kawabata Makoto, Incredible
String Band, Fursaxa, Black Forest/Black Sea, Bert Jansch,
Larkin Grimm, No Neck Blues Band, Jandek, Avarus, Neptune,
Charalambides, and many more.
“Spires emit such inspired gusts of collective fire that they resemble a
witches’ coven almost as much as a band, their shadow-draped music
seeming to issue forth organically from the soil like a sulfurous hot spring
… [they] invoke the unbounded, ageless music one might expect to hear
emanating from the deepest forest, as mysterious black-cloaked figures
dance around the fire ring.” — Pitchfork
“[Spires] navigate an empathic terrain that veers between acid-damaged
Comus-inspired witchery and more mild-mannered areas that resemble
Bridget St. John suffering from ergotism, or The Raincoats as a
coven.” — Dream
“Imagine if the Sun City Girls were played by real girls.” — Jack Rose

STEVE VON TILL - A Grave Is A Grim Horse CD (Neurot)
Steve Von Till's third solo outing maintains his allegiance to folk traditions, but A Grave Is A Grim Horse
is a much more personal and confident effort. The Neurosis
singer/guitarist intertwines interpretations of songs by Nick Drake,
Townes Van Zant, Mickey Newberry, and Lyle Lovett with his own powerful
yet subtle, graceful originals, which stand on par with these
time-honored songwriters. On songs like the title track and "Looking
For Dry Land," Von Till comes into his own as a composer and arranger,
perfectly adorning infectious songs with flourishes of swooping
strings, pedal steel, organ, et al.
Where his previous releases showed reverence for the past, A Grave Is A Grim Horse peers directly forward, envisioning a path where others see fields.
